Piatra Secuiului

After visiting the salt mine, our next stop was Piatra Secuiului. I have never been there before, although is not that far from Cluj-Napoca where I have studied.

You know you are in a village where many Hungarians live when at the local shop you are greeted in Hungarian and not in Romanian, although you are in Romania and not in Hungary.

We did not spend much time in the village, we also did not have much time left of the day, so we hurried up to reach the top. I did not prepare very well for the hike, had no map of the hike and I just hoped it will be well marked as it usually is in Romania, and I was not wrong.

On the way there we met a praying mantis. It is quite often in Romania to come across either green or brown praying mantises.

On the top, we met two other hikers and their lovely dog. Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the dog .... I should start writing it down. We also had a lovely view of the valley.

After enjoying our small break we headed back to the village, as I was not sure how long it will take or where the path was going and we still had to drive to our lodging for the night. Before descending through the forest, we meet another cute dog waiting for his group to return.

One thing I really love in Romania is the many Crocus flowers you see in the fields in spring and autumn. It is truly magical each time.

After a long walk in the forest, which felt like forever, we were out in the open fields again. This time we met another dog but without his owner in sight. He walked in front of us, kind of showing us the way, but at some point stopped waiting for us and then we lost track of him. I felt a bit sad seeing the dog alone, I hope he has a loving family somewhere.

Back in the village, we encountered a group of playful dogs and cats. It breaks my heart seeing dogs on the streets, especially as I know Romanians are not taking very good care of their animals, and most probably none of them are sterilized. I wish I could take with me any street animal I encounter and offer them love and a shelter...

A walk close to Rein Abbey, Austria

The trip this time was a small walk in the forest next to Rein Abbey, Steiermark, Austria. Rein Abbey is a wonderful Cistercian monastery founded in the 12 th century. If you hike in the forest next to this beautiful abbey, you will find one smaller church on the top of the hill and a chapel. There, we had a nice photo shooting for some LARP costume. I would say the place was just perfect to fulfil the purpose of our trip.  On the way back we were greeted by more snow and a lovely afternoon light filling the forest.

Wasserweg (the water path) in Liebenfels - part II

This blog post  is about the second half of the Wasserweg. You can read the first part and check out the beautiful pictures here . During the first hike, we did not manage to finish the entire hike. Hiking with older people means sometimes slowing down, taking more breaks and enjoying nature around you. Although, there is the possibility to drive somewhere to where the half hike would start, this time we did the entire thing in one walk. The path continues next to the stream until you reach a bigger waterfall. If you are lucky, you might have the waterfall all by yourself and not have to wait to take photos of this wonderful place.  After the waterfall, the path continues until the next village, where you can stop and have a snack. We didn’t really go until this restaurant or hut but instead stopped once we came out of the forest and just enjoyed the view and tried to pet a little pony. He did not seem impressed and wanted no pets, unfortunately. Overall, I find this h...

Felsenmeer

A truly magnificent sight, lots of huge rocks in a valley, is befitting the name of sea of rocks (aka Felsenmeer in German). After we moved to Darmstadt, I tried to find the most interesting areas to visit around, and Felsenmeer was one of those places. How exactly this sea of rocks formed I am not certain, but it seems a process that took many years.  The area now is quite popular, people often trying to either climb up or down the rocks. We went down, and although it can be fun jumping from one rock to another, it can also be dangerous.  Felsenmeer We did a round hike (11 km) around the area, where we saw many horses, and sheep, beautiful flowers, lots of stones, passed a tower called Owl Tower but did not see any owls.....passed a pond.....and had a lovely hike through the forest. Although the Felsenmeer was quite busy with people, the rest of the hike was nice and quiet.  Owl tower Find the frog
