Kletterpark Spielmäuer

We did another lovely via ferrata path called Tristan in the Kletterpark Spielmäuer. It was one of those days when I had to practice my driving before my driving licence and finish the 1000 km I had to do before being able to do the exam. I don’t remember much of the drive, just that at some point I couldn’t drive anymore and had to switch with Dorian. My friend, Irma, was in the back, but she is always so calm and friendly, so she did not mind so much my not perfect driving.

The Kletterpark Spielmäuer offers three options for via ferrata, one really hard, one easy and one in between which is precisely the one we did.

Dorian and Irma liked it a lot, as it goes under an arc somehow entering a cave. I, on the other hand, did not like it so much, many times, the feet were just on some metal bars and nothing else, if one would have been loose you could have quickly fallen. I was happy whenever my feet were back on the rock and not on the metal bars. I think overall is a nice via ferrata and would recommend it to beginners.

On the top, we enjoyed the lovely view and did some group photos. On the way back, we decided to take a different pathway down and pass the devil’s bridge, a beautiful arc. Also, we found many mushrooms. At the beginning, I was skeptic to pick up the weird orange looking mushrooms known as Lactarius deliciosus, according to my friend. But after she told me she knows the mushroom, I continue looking for more. I kind of like mushroom hunting although I don’t do it often, I used to go often in the forest for mushrooms as a kid, and now I am just good at seeing them, or at least that is what my friend says.

When we were almost at the car, just like 15 more minutes to go a heavy rainstorm started and by the time we were at the car, we were all wet. Around 20 min before the rain started, we encountered a bit group who were heading for the klettersteig, we really hoped they were fine. I always wonder, what do you do if it starts raining heavily and you are on a via ferrata? It looks quite dangerous if it is wet.

I was happy that on the way back, Dorian drove. It was still raining badly.

A walk close to Rein Abbey, Austria

The trip this time was a small walk in the forest next to Rein Abbey, Steiermark, Austria. Rein Abbey is a wonderful Cistercian monastery founded in the 12 th century. If you hike in the forest next to this beautiful abbey, you will find one smaller church on the top of the hill and a chapel. There, we had a nice photo shooting for some LARP costume. I would say the place was just perfect to fulfil the purpose of our trip.  On the way back we were greeted by more snow and a lovely afternoon light filling the forest.

Wasserweg (the water path) in Liebenfels - part II

This blog post  is about the second half of the Wasserweg. You can read the first part and check out the beautiful pictures here . During the first hike, we did not manage to finish the entire hike. Hiking with older people means sometimes slowing down, taking more breaks and enjoying nature around you. Although, there is the possibility to drive somewhere to where the half hike would start, this time we did the entire thing in one walk. The path continues next to the stream until you reach a bigger waterfall. If you are lucky, you might have the waterfall all by yourself and not have to wait to take photos of this wonderful place.  After the waterfall, the path continues until the next village, where you can stop and have a snack. We didn’t really go until this restaurant or hut but instead stopped once we came out of the forest and just enjoyed the view and tried to pet a little pony. He did not seem impressed and wanted no pets, unfortunately. Overall, I find this h...

Felsenmeer

A truly magnificent sight, lots of huge rocks in a valley, is befitting the name of sea of rocks (aka Felsenmeer in German). After we moved to Darmstadt, I tried to find the most interesting areas to visit around, and Felsenmeer was one of those places. How exactly this sea of rocks formed I am not certain, but it seems a process that took many years.  The area now is quite popular, people often trying to either climb up or down the rocks. We went down, and although it can be fun jumping from one rock to another, it can also be dangerous.  Felsenmeer We did a round hike (11 km) around the area, where we saw many horses, and sheep, beautiful flowers, lots of stones, passed a tower called Owl Tower but did not see any owls.....passed a pond.....and had a lovely hike through the forest. Although the Felsenmeer was quite busy with people, the rest of the hike was nice and quiet.  Owl tower Find the frog
