Hochstuhl (2237 m)

My favourite place is always in the mountains. Not only do I feel like I have achieved something when I am on the top, but the views are breathtaking.

Austria has a lot of amazing mountains to explore and many via-ferrata paths. After doing a few via-ferrata I find it easier than hiking up a mountain, maybe because you use the entire body and not only your legs.

This time we went to Hochstuhl (2237 m) which is on the border between Austria and Slovenia. It was another place we visited because I needed to gain driving experience. I must say it was quite an experience, especially driving a bit through the forest on no pavement to get to the parking spot. D was not too happy with my driving, but considering the road, I think I did ok.

The hike started with a bit of tension, it was not clear exactly where the via-ferrata path begins, and I thought we went on the wrong path and had an argument about it. But we did finally found our way there. One a short part of the hike to the via-ferrata, we hiked together with a German guy. He went ahead on the via-ferrata and we were hoping to meet him again on the top, but he was gone. I guess we were a bit slow, taking our time and enjoying the lovely view.

Once on the top, you can see Slovenia and Bled. My Bled photo is not the best. Unfortunately, my camera objective is not the best. All the way up there we were by ourselves, met nobody else. It felt good having the mountain only for ourselves. We did see several people hiking from Slovenia to a nearby mountain peak, but not to Hochstuhl.

The entire hike was actually quite long, the via-ferrata is not very long. Still, every time you think you are done, there is another part and another and another….

After our short break on the top, we headed back, to discover an unexpected valley of just rocks and some patches of pretty flowers, no grass or green areas. I totally did not expect this part. The hike was just full of surprises.

[Bye, bye stoney valley]

Once you pass the stony valley, the green mountains greet you again. We had a quick stop at the Klagenfurter Hut and enjoyed the view of the mountains. On the last part, we even meet some happy cows.

If you ever go to this part of Austria, I totally recommend this hike. There is also a path to Hochstuhl as a typical hike, not via-ferrata. The views are just worth it.

A walk close to Rein Abbey, Austria

The trip this time was a small walk in the forest next to Rein Abbey, Steiermark, Austria. Rein Abbey is a wonderful Cistercian monastery founded in the 12 th century. If you hike in the forest next to this beautiful abbey, you will find one smaller church on the top of the hill and a chapel. There, we had a nice photo shooting for some LARP costume. I would say the place was just perfect to fulfil the purpose of our trip.  On the way back we were greeted by more snow and a lovely afternoon light filling the forest.

Wasserweg (the water path) in Liebenfels - part II

This blog post  is about the second half of the Wasserweg. You can read the first part and check out the beautiful pictures here . During the first hike, we did not manage to finish the entire hike. Hiking with older people means sometimes slowing down, taking more breaks and enjoying nature around you. Although, there is the possibility to drive somewhere to where the half hike would start, this time we did the entire thing in one walk. The path continues next to the stream until you reach a bigger waterfall. If you are lucky, you might have the waterfall all by yourself and not have to wait to take photos of this wonderful place.  After the waterfall, the path continues until the next village, where you can stop and have a snack. We didn’t really go until this restaurant or hut but instead stopped once we came out of the forest and just enjoyed the view and tried to pet a little pony. He did not seem impressed and wanted no pets, unfortunately. Overall, I find this h...

Felsenmeer

A truly magnificent sight, lots of huge rocks in a valley, is befitting the name of sea of rocks (aka Felsenmeer in German). After we moved to Darmstadt, I tried to find the most interesting areas to visit around, and Felsenmeer was one of those places. How exactly this sea of rocks formed I am not certain, but it seems a process that took many years.  The area now is quite popular, people often trying to either climb up or down the rocks. We went down, and although it can be fun jumping from one rock to another, it can also be dangerous.  Felsenmeer We did a round hike (11 km) around the area, where we saw many horses, and sheep, beautiful flowers, lots of stones, passed a tower called Owl Tower but did not see any owls.....passed a pond.....and had a lovely hike through the forest. Although the Felsenmeer was quite busy with people, the rest of the hike was nice and quiet.  Owl tower Find the frog
