Speikkogel

In general, when you think of mountains you think of many rocks and mainly a stony top or even better covered in snow, but Speikkogel looks more like a hill, but a hill at 1988 m. The view from the top is nice, many valleys and some other mountains.

But to start with the beginning, we started the hike quite late and I was worried the entire time that it will rain, and it did by the end of the hike. The first part of the hike was mainly through forest, always having on one side or the other a stream of water.

On our hike we saw nice mushrooms, but also a baby deer, not more than a week old, it was really cute, and the mother was a bit scared of us, but all was well, the two didn’t get separated.

After the first part of the hike, you should reach a mountain hut and a church, I kept wondering why there is a church at 1500 m altitude when the only house around there is the mountain hut, unfortunately I didn’t ask the people at the hut.

After the hut, begins a very steep part, where we had the luck to encounter cows, in general I really like cows, but I am a bit afraid that some might attack you, but for us all was fine, the cows ignored us, and we ignored them. As you hike the last 400 m in altitude, you see one hill and you think when I reach that I will see the cross, well…nope, you get to one point where you think that’s it just to see another hill, and then another and then finally the cross.

It was my first time ever in a hike to take my 50 mm lens instead of my normal 18-75 mm lens, so taking photos of the mountain and the group photo was tricky but I managed.

On the way back, we stopped for some food at the hut and to have a drink, I had spinach soup, it looked so good that I had to take a photo.

Afterwards, I photographed some flowers…

And we saw two alpine ibex...

and a snake, but it could also be the lizard that looks like a snake, I’m not an expert so I cannot really say.

And of course, I’ve met a cat exactly when we were back in Graz, she didn’t want to play with me, maybe next time I see her I will try to be more convincing.

A walk close to Rein Abbey, Austria

The trip this time was a small walk in the forest next to Rein Abbey, Steiermark, Austria. Rein Abbey is a wonderful Cistercian monastery founded in the 12 th century. If you hike in the forest next to this beautiful abbey, you will find one smaller church on the top of the hill and a chapel. There, we had a nice photo shooting for some LARP costume. I would say the place was just perfect to fulfil the purpose of our trip.  On the way back we were greeted by more snow and a lovely afternoon light filling the forest.

Wasserweg (the water path) in Liebenfels - part II

This blog post  is about the second half of the Wasserweg. You can read the first part and check out the beautiful pictures here . During the first hike, we did not manage to finish the entire hike. Hiking with older people means sometimes slowing down, taking more breaks and enjoying nature around you. Although, there is the possibility to drive somewhere to where the half hike would start, this time we did the entire thing in one walk. The path continues next to the stream until you reach a bigger waterfall. If you are lucky, you might have the waterfall all by yourself and not have to wait to take photos of this wonderful place.  After the waterfall, the path continues until the next village, where you can stop and have a snack. We didn’t really go until this restaurant or hut but instead stopped once we came out of the forest and just enjoyed the view and tried to pet a little pony. He did not seem impressed and wanted no pets, unfortunately. Overall, I find this h...

Felsenmeer

A truly magnificent sight, lots of huge rocks in a valley, is befitting the name of sea of rocks (aka Felsenmeer in German). After we moved to Darmstadt, I tried to find the most interesting areas to visit around, and Felsenmeer was one of those places. How exactly this sea of rocks formed I am not certain, but it seems a process that took many years.  The area now is quite popular, people often trying to either climb up or down the rocks. We went down, and although it can be fun jumping from one rock to another, it can also be dangerous.  Felsenmeer We did a round hike (11 km) around the area, where we saw many horses, and sheep, beautiful flowers, lots of stones, passed a tower called Owl Tower but did not see any owls.....passed a pond.....and had a lovely hike through the forest. Although the Felsenmeer was quite busy with people, the rest of the hike was nice and quiet.  Owl tower Find the frog
