On my first trip to France, we’ve made the first stop in Verdun, a place famous for one battle during the First World War, called the Battle of Verdun that took place in 1916. Today the battlefield of Verdun is a place of museums and memorials.
On our way to visit the Fort Douaumont, we saw the Douaumont Ossuary where more than 100000 soldiers rest.
The walk to the Fort is very nice, a small forest on both sides of the road, which still holds the battle marks even after more than 100 years.
We were a bit disappointed to find out that the Fort Douaumont was closed, although on the internet we did not find any information about the fort being closed. But despite that, we could walk around the Fort Douaumont and see it at least the outside and its surroundings.
On our way back to the car, we made a short stop in the graveyard and at the Ossuary.
