Black Forest - Day 1 - From Hinterzarten to Feldberg-Bärental

This was the first day out of 3 days of Black Forest. There are so many interesting trails through the Black Forest, but most are 4-5 days hike, and we only had 3 days. I selected the trail so that is a round trail, meaning we would be back at the car after the 3 days hike.
The first day started a bit late, it took us longer than expected to reach the starting point, traffic, congestion on the highway and having difficulties finding a parking spot. For the parking spot, I was disappointed that is really hard to find a parking spot for 3 days, as for most parking spots in Hinterzarten you were allowed to park your car only for one day. Luckily, one man allowed us to park on his property behind his restaurant, so we left the car there and started our hike. It is nice to meet people who are willing to help you even when you are a complete stranger.
Our first day hike was around 20 km long and according to Komoot app it took us almost 5 h.

Close to Feldsee

It started nicely, we passed a nice hotel/restaurant and saw an interesting fountain shaped as sol key, then we were in a park where we saw a cute squirrel, which was not afraid to take food from people's hands. Later we passed a house where we saw goats, and afterwards, we were in the forest away from the village.

Lovely fountain

I organized the 3-day hike around lakes, so that each day we would pass an important lake in the area where we were hiking. For the first day, it was lake Feldsee. But before Feldsee, we passed a small pond, saw many cute flowers and simply enjoyed the quietness of the forest.

The first lake we passed was Mathisleweiher. Really beautiful area, but many people around. We had a short stop at the lake to have some snacks and of course, take more photos.

After the break, we continued our journey towards Feldsee, passed a nice trail with lots of pink and purple flowers......

.............and reached a farm, where we met a cock. I hoped there will be a fountain nearby to fill up our bottles, but we did not find any.

Not long after that we arrived at Feldsee and did a tour around the lake. We again stopped at the lake, but away from other people to take a short break. The lake is beautiful, no wonder so many people come to see it.

Later we passed a waterfall, also very nice and after that, we really tried our best to hurry up a bit and not arrive too late at our destination, which was Feldberg-Bärental. We also had a nice view from far away of the Titisee, our lake destination for the third hike day. When I booked the nights for our 3-days hike, I was really surprised by how expensive this area is. I was used to pay less in Austria when we were hiking for more than one day. I guess in Germany, they try as much as possible to get all they can for areas that are very touristic.

A walk close to Rein Abbey, Austria

The trip this time was a small walk in the forest next to Rein Abbey, Steiermark, Austria. Rein Abbey is a wonderful Cistercian monastery founded in the 12 th century. If you hike in the forest next to this beautiful abbey, you will find one smaller church on the top of the hill and a chapel. There, we had a nice photo shooting for some LARP costume. I would say the place was just perfect to fulfil the purpose of our trip.  On the way back we were greeted by more snow and a lovely afternoon light filling the forest.

Wasserweg (the water path) in Liebenfels - part II

This blog post  is about the second half of the Wasserweg. You can read the first part and check out the beautiful pictures here . During the first hike, we did not manage to finish the entire hike. Hiking with older people means sometimes slowing down, taking more breaks and enjoying nature around you. Although, there is the possibility to drive somewhere to where the half hike would start, this time we did the entire thing in one walk. The path continues next to the stream until you reach a bigger waterfall. If you are lucky, you might have the waterfall all by yourself and not have to wait to take photos of this wonderful place.  After the waterfall, the path continues until the next village, where you can stop and have a snack. We didn’t really go until this restaurant or hut but instead stopped once we came out of the forest and just enjoyed the view and tried to pet a little pony. He did not seem impressed and wanted no pets, unfortunately. Overall, I find this h...

Felsenmeer

A truly magnificent sight, lots of huge rocks in a valley, is befitting the name of sea of rocks (aka Felsenmeer in German). After we moved to Darmstadt, I tried to find the most interesting areas to visit around, and Felsenmeer was one of those places. How exactly this sea of rocks formed I am not certain, but it seems a process that took many years.  The area now is quite popular, people often trying to either climb up or down the rocks. We went down, and although it can be fun jumping from one rock to another, it can also be dangerous.  Felsenmeer We did a round hike (11 km) around the area, where we saw many horses, and sheep, beautiful flowers, lots of stones, passed a tower called Owl Tower but did not see any owls.....passed a pond.....and had a lovely hike through the forest. Although the Felsenmeer was quite busy with people, the rest of the hike was nice and quiet.  Owl tower Find the frog
