Leipzig has been a trade city
since the Roman Empire, being strategically positioned between two main trade
roads, Via Regia and Via Imperii. Today it offers a variety of entertainment including
a lot of classic music, especially on the streets, which is great. For me even though I’ve visited it for the
second time I would still not like to live there, too flat for my taste,
although the lakes around the city look amazing.
I arrived in Leipzig on a
sunny day of August for a conference, on the day of the arrival everything was
late, my flight was delayed, then the train was delayed, and I didn’t make it
to go eat with my colleague. From the plane I could see that the areas around
the city really needed some rain, everything was so dry, almost like a desert.
One the first day really in the
city, me and my colleague Kaisa, just walked around and enjoyed a bit the city.
Some things you would find interesting in Leipzig are the St. Thomas Church, in
front of which you can see the statue of Sebastian Bach.
And the St. Nicholas church built in
several different architectural style, you can find Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque
and a lovely neoclassic interior.
Outside there is the cradle of
peaceful revolution built in the same colors as the interior of the church. The
peaceful revolution in Leipzig against the communist party started first as prayers
for peace in the St. Nicholas Church, that later became the Monday Demonstrations.
